Me and my work

I work in the media of etching, drypoint, lithography, direct gravure and photogravure. The work begins with drawn studies or photographs. I choose the subsequent print medium - the crisp etching line, the soft lithograph line, the rich drypoint line, or the gravure method – to reinforce the meaning intended within the image.

My subject matter is the natural form - the overlooked, or less remarked. There is always an initial ‘wow’ factor which draws me in. This can be purely visual - a perfection of form perhaps, or the subject’s resonance with those historical, ethical or environmental matters which interest me - or both. I aim to give these small remnants of nature an iconographic stature, to enable them to stand as a reminder that, despite their vulnerability, they generate and nurture life, and that there is an importance to their placement in the natural world. I often use these natural forms in conjunction with architectural form to reinforce the connection between the human endeavour and the natural world.

I have always enjoyed drawing, and the graphic possibilities of printmaking offer me many more ways of making the drawn line and many new means of creating subtle tonalities.

I studied at Humberside University in England, and spent four years in the printmaking studio there. I had an excellent grounding in printmaking, and etching and dry point became my media of choice. I enjoy all aspects of the process: alchemy of the metal in acid; facility of the etching needle on the plate surface; certainty of the dry point tool driving into the metal.

After moving to the United States in 1996, I studied stone lithography at the Corcoran School of Art + Design in Washington DC. Another medium perfect for me - the seductive mark of the crayon on the smooth stone surface and the ability to incorporate marks similar to watercolor in my imagery. In 2004 I studied photogravure at Pyramid Atlantic Art Centre in Silver Spring, Maryland. This complex process, which converts a photographic image into a copper plate etching, has opened up many new possibilities, particularly when combined with other digital imagery. My subsequent experiments with direct gravure, which begins with a drawn image and takes it through the photogravure process, offer many exciting possibilities for the future.

My studio in 2013 comprises: 1890 Fuchs and Lang lithographic press; stone-grinding sink and lithograhic stones; Charles Brand etching press; aquatint box; hotplate; Nuarc exposure unit.

I exhibit both nationally within the United States and internationally, with work exhibited in Turkey, Taiwan, Bulgaria, Italy, United Kingdomand New Zealand between 2010 and 2012.

I have work in both public and private collections. Public collections include (in Washington DC), The Library of Congress, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Georgetown University, The World Bank.
